Frequently Asked Questions

Why does CommandLogic 360 refer to this type of first aid as “Point-of-Wounding Care”?
SWAT TThe interventions taught in P-O-W Care training deal with extremely serious trauma, and must be implemented immediately, with whatever material is available on scene. For instance, a patient who is bleeding out from the femoral artery can die within a few minutes – so the first priority is to manage the uncontrolled hemorrhage (tourniquet, etc.), even before transporting the patient to definitive care, if necessary.
What does the term, “preventable death” mean?
MannikinOutdoorsLessons learned from the field of combat medicine indicate that there are 3 (most common) types of life-threatening conditions where immediate interventions have proven effective in preventing patient death. These are: severe hemorrhaging from extremities, tension pneumothorax, & compromised airway.  These same principles can apply to casualties in a civilian setting, such as the Boston Marathon bombing, or Columbine H.S. shooting.
What’s in the P-O-W Kit?
POW KitThe Point-of-Wounding Kit, or “P-O-W” Kit contains an array of life-saving medical adjuncts (supplies) and personal protective equipment (PPE) that can be used with patients who have sustained gravely serious injuries (e.g., penetrating chest trauma or limb amputation.) Contents include: Combat Application Tourniquet, SWAT Tourniquet, Quick Clot Combat Gauze, Bolin Chest Seal, CPR face shield, nitrile gloves, & clothing shears.
Who is P-O-W Care training designed for?
Swat-with-MannikinIMAG0011_BURST002_COVERAnyone interested in becoming empowered to save lives! This ranges from the civilian layperson to the armed police officer. Course content is tailored to specific groups, including civilians, armed law enforcement personnel, or other emergency responders. Stakeholder institutions include schools, malls, movie theaters, houses of worship, large entertainment venues, and more.
What kinds of things are taught in a P-O-W Care class?
CAT TourniquetThreat awareness & response (e.g., active assailant, terrorism), hemorrhage control, management of airway & breathing, basic patient triage, managing complications (e.g., shock), hasty casualty movement, & body substance isolation. Special weapons tactics, including “care under fire” covered in 2-day session for armed law enforcement.
How does a student become proficient in life-saving interventions without advanced medical training?
Wound PackingThe interventions taught are not complex. Students learn the relevant anatomy and physiology associated with various types of trauma, including wounds that are amenable to the application of medical adjuncts contained in the P-O-W Kit. Class participants acquire proficiency by developing the “muscle memory” through repetitive, hands-on practice during hyper-realistic scenarios employing high-tech trauma manikins and moulage.
Why should you train?
techline-manikinSchool shootings, terrorist attacks, accidents, workplace violence, disasters – some of us will find ourselves in the midst of such unspeakable calamity. Police, Fire, and EMS are on the way to your location, but what can you do in the meantime? YOU CAN TAKE ACTION! With the right know-how and appropriate tools, even the layperson can ensure the otherwise mortally wounded patient gets to the hospital ALIVE ON ARRIVAL. “The fate of the wounded rests in the hands of the one who applies the first dressing.”
What qualifications do the P-O-W Care instructors have?
Class instruction is delivered by experienced trainers with backgrounds in emergency medicine, counter-terrorism, law enforcement, the military, and fire/emergency medical services. [Learn more about individual instructors and their qualifications.]
